(Lisa “Born Again” feat. Doja Cat and Raye review): Good, But Inconsistent

It’s good. It’s very good. This, by far, feels like the most polished production from Lisa’s solo career so far. We’ve got a 5 part M/V that has a distinct palette, vibe, and motif. We’ve got a song that is chilling, memorable, and catchy. And of course, we’ve got a collab with both Doja Cat and Raye.

All I’d say, though, is that Lisa can work on her consistency. I very much like this dark, confident, yet almost creepy black-and white concept. But then, in the beginning of the video, she gave us this dictionary definition of “Born Again,” where she said Born Again meant “The transformation into a New Woman who embraces her freedom to become the person she desires to be.” She’s obviously referencing her previous solo song, “New Woman.” But “New Woman” was so wildly different from “Born Again” that it almost feels discombobulating that they have a connection. A much brighter M/V, a much softer song, much more retrospective lyrics, and even the Spanish collab with Rosalía…absolutely nothing is alike.

It’s not that diversity in concept is a bad thing. It’s just that I think establishing some sort of brand, some sort of concept where people could look at it a mile away and go, “that’s Lisa’s,” would help Lisa along a lot–especially with a project like this where she seems to be stringing multiple songs and videos together to form a single storyline. It would help establish her identity as an artist–especially as a “new” one, as she’s drifting away from her BLACKPINK days–even more effectively.
