J-Hope (feat. GloRilla) “Killin’ It Girl” Review

This is…J-Hope’s third single since being released from the military (I think)? To be honest, though, I’m quite disappointed with this song…

Concept/Message: 2

The message of this song is just… “you’re so hot.” Arguably, therefore, this song has no message. There is no social commentary being made…this song is just a performance-driven song, made for J-Hope to show off his charisma and dancing.

Visuals: 3.5

We start with J-Hope lying smack in the middle of a street…quite the way to grab the viewer’s attention, I must say. The set grabbed my attention too. Where did he film this? I don’t recognize the language on the signs and the car…is it Thai? Or Cambodian? (Sorry if I’m wrong!) These streets certainly make the M/V stand out: we rarely see K-pop M/Vs set in this country (whichever one it is, sorry again).

Especially with the M/V still completely in black and white, I thought we were in for a unique M/V up to this point. But then…the scenes with GloRilla came in.

Guys. Did the M/V directors just suddenly lose all creativity? They just had her strike some poses and lip-sync in a completely…white background. They let her dance on some black tiles later…but her set was so empty, cheap, and boring compared to J-Hope’s. It just looked like…blatant laziness.

That’s something I can’t really forgive. But I gotta say–the change from black/white to color was pretty cool. So was J-Hope’s charisma and dancing skills (that’s where the extra .5 in my rating comes from).

Lyrics: 2

I mean, this song is basically just “You’re killin’ it, girl” repeated like 800 times. What other rating can I give it? Also, the lyrics in the verse were straight up cringey. “Runway ready, gotta get some confetti / ‘Cause we gotta celebrate like it’s your birthday”… (?)… “Call a nurse before it gets worse / I’ma really, really need first aid”… (??)… seriously, guys–we can do so much better.

Music: 3

Honestly, this song kind of grew on me. I hated it at first–my greatest pet-peeve, autotune, made a grand appearance in the first verse. But honestly–the chorus, repetitive as it is, is quite catchy. I think those “oh-oh”s interspersed in there give it a more touching, intimate kind of sound. And the instrumental was definitely interesting–the clinking sounds certainly grew on me.
