Ooh yay–KiiKii’s first major comeback since their debut! “Dancing Alone” is a cute, summer-themed, laid-back song about friendship and togetherness. It’s enjoyable–but honestly, too laid-back. I felt like each line in the chorus tapered off in an honestly unsatisfying way…it was like they were holding something back, not permitting themselves to belt out their happiness of befriending each other–which does not help advance their song’s message of friendship. And the M/V–pretty and sun-kissed as it was, I couldn’t help but crave for a storyline. I felt it could’ve been so much stronger if they first explored what it felt like to feel alone–the isolation and melancholy, as explored in ITZY’s “Imaginary Friend”–then portrayed how sweet and loving it felt to be seen and understood by a friend, like the way it’s done in TWICE’s “You Make Me Feel Special” or IVE’s “Be Alright.” Summer, friendship, and loneliness are all explored here–but to a much too mild degree. I needed some angst.
